Stage Hair

CORRECT PLACEMENT - at the nape of the neck

Our students and their families look forward to our annual recital because we put on a professional show. We do our part by renting out a state-of-the-art stage, hiring a professional lighting company, and by following our 40 years of experience in how to make our dancers look their best when they perform.

No matter how young or old a performer is, they are prone to get distracted easily onstage if ANYTHING is out-of-place. Even a hair or costume piece in the way can be enough to distract even the most experienced performer. That is why we require out dancers to have their hair slicked back and set into a tight, neat, low bun. This allows the audience to clearly see our dancers' faces and everyone looks neat, uniform & professional.

INCORRECT PLACEMENT - examples of  "too high"

We have added some bun tutorials here on this page to help anyone who needs to learn to do a nice, neat bun. We sell two kinds of bun makers at the studio for those people who feel it will help, but using our bun maker is not required. We strongly suggest you practice a few times before dress rehearsal to avoid a stressful dress rehearsal and recital day. Practicing will help you get an idea for how to do it correctly. Everyone's hair is different and so it may take a few tries to get it right.

How to use the Whirl-a-Bun Bun Maker

Here is a short tutorial how to use the bun maker we sell at the studio. It comes in 3 sizes and 3 colors to match a multitude of hair types. As you can see, with a little practice, the bun maker is so easy, even a young child can learn to do it by herself.

Note:

  • If your child's hair is layered, it will cause more pieces of hair to stick out of the whirl-a-bun. This can easily be fixed by wrapping a small hair net around the bun after it has been completed.

Other Ways to Make a Bun

If you choose not to use the bun maker we sell but still need a tutorial on how to secure your child's hair correctly, here is a great video. It shows 3 ballerinas with different types of hair how they make their ballet bun every day. This video really shows that there isn't just one way to make a bun. As long as it is tight and neat and there are no spare hairs in the dancer's face, that is a correct bun for stage!
